WordsPlease magazine 2 for intelligent children (16 pages)

'Murder at the Circus' is the beginning of a great detective story that intelligent children can finish in their own way. The story is described on the website and clues given.

Tongue twisters are the item of fun poetry in this module and the item on the website gives examples of some traditional and some new tongue twisters for children to experiment with. Even Jane Davis, the author, found it difficult to say some of them and we had great fun in the recording studio as she struggled with a few old favourites!

Using a draft book is the next stage in the development of story writing and youngsters are shown how to use this to write drafts and edit these appropriately. We emphasise that many professional writers use this technique and that this, combined with their notebook and camera, provides a formidable tool combination for excellent story writing.

The article on page 6 continues the techniques used in the development of characters and gives further examples following on from the ones described on the WordsPlease website.

The serious side of poetry is covered with a start on war poetry. Jane has a son who has served in Afghanistan so she has a good deal of experience of the worries of being a soldier's mother and the anxiety this causes. It's not all bad news, of course, and she describes some interesting aspects of the relationships within the group - how her son's sergeant reacted to her son's rather over-heated feet.

More grammar and this module covers nouns and adjectives. The different types of noun (common, proper, abstract and collective) are discussed and examples given.

This is followed by the history of surnames and again this is something that intelligent children are interested in. The emphasis is on how people developed surnames based on their fathers' occupations.

Another type of code is covered on page 10 (don't forget to see the website for the full background and information), along with a simple crossword covering the types of cryptic clues covered so far.

More drama activities are covered on the website and follow up activities in the magazine give suggestions for visits to local theatres or even to join a local theatre group.

In the section on sayings and expressions, this module's emphasis is on common phrases such as 'milk of human kindness'. Intelligent children often like to ask their parents and grandparents about sayings they remember and their meanings. They can then try them out with their own English language work at school.

Rabbit, rabbit is a great word game based on the well known 'Just a minute'. Excellent for practising good oral communication skills.

More is covered on the history of spelling and the Celts language 'Ogham'. Great alphabet for youngsters to learn.

The fun page returns and this module covers the word graveyard - words no longer in use, but which sound great and we think should return into common use. 'Another cup of ninny-broth, if you don't mind, old chap!'

Finally the very tricky crossword. This will stretch the brains of even the most intelligent children (and their parents too, no wonder).
